Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)

The name “liquefied gas” finds its origin in the possibility to obtain gaseous propane and butane at a normal temperature and atmospheric pressure. Only moderate pressure or refrigeration is required to convert them into a liquid state. LPG occupies 274 times less volume as a liquid than as a gas. As a consequence, LPG is easy to transport and store, making it the most multi-purpose fuel. Also is a much cleaner energy source as compared to other fuels like coal.

Approximately 200 000 – 400 000 tons of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is manufactured and sold in South Africa each year, generating a turnover of about R 3-5.5 billion

Only 3 percent of South African household uses LPG as their energy source.

Uses of LPG: Due to its versatility LPG use varies across all spectrums from industrial use to agriculture, catering, hospitality, electricity and domestic use.

Since the Eskom crisis we have seen an increase in the use of LPG for domestic purposes though this has been hindered by supply and lack of cylinders.

Increasingly, motorists around the world are also using or switching to LPG as an alternative to petrol or diesel, but uptake of this trend has been slow in the South African market.

Source of LPG: Manufacturing occurs at all local refineries, from both crude oil, natural gas and coal. LPG is not a by-product of the refining process, but a primary product. The rest is imported through Richard’s Bay and Port Elizabeth.

Pricing: The LPG price is regulated by the Department of Energy using the Maximum Refinery Gate Price (MRGP). The price is based on the average price per liter of basic fuel price of 93 Octane Lead Replacement Petrol for the previous month. The price is adjusted every first Wednesday of each month. The Minister of Energy also set maximum retail prices for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) on a monthly basis
